The Gospel According to Bj.

Ouay and the Choc Farm

By Bj. Anderson - Written Jan. 27th 2006

This story is one that I made up. I hope by the end of the story you discover the symbolism. If you don't then please email me.

Ouay was given 20 acres of land and 110 bushels of choc by his father.

"This is what my father gave me when he sent me out on my own." Ouay's father said. "That is all I am giving to you. You must use it carefully to feed your wife and kids from now on."

Ouay grew up helping his father grow choc. So he knew some facts about choc. He knew that each choc will produce exactly 10 chocs. He also knew that in each acre of land he can plant one bushel of chocs.

Ouay had to carefully budget his supply of choc, because it is the only thing they eat on his planet, and what his father gave him is all he will get.

Well according to how much his immediate family normally eats, he discovered that they need exactly 100 bushels of choc to last one year.

That leaves only 10 bushels of choc to plant. Ouay plants it and at the end of the year he harvests 100 bushels of choc.

Now Ouay realizes a problem. Since his family requires exactly 100 bushels of choc to live for a year, what is he going to plant this time for next years harvest? "Oh dear!" thought Ouay.

"We have no choice but to cut back on eating choc so we can grow more for next year." Ouay told his family. They were not very happy, but a sacrifice had to be made. So they took 10 bushels of choc to plant, which is 10% of what they harvested. They had to live off of 90% for this coming year.

The next harvest brought in 100 bushels of choc just as last year. Ouay could see a pattern in this that he did not like. If they keep sowing only 10% of their income then they are not even breaking even. "Kids, we are going to have to sow more than 10% if we want to get ahead." Said Ouay.

So this time they decided to only live off of 80% and to sow 20% into the ground and see what they get next year.

The next harvest produced 200 bushels of choc from the 20 bushels they planted. Now they could have 100 bushels of choc to eat and plant 20 bushels for next year. That leaves them with 80 bushels that they can sell. Now they are making profit. Ouay bought some more land and increased the percentage of his sowing. And he and his family lived happily ever after.
