The Gospel According to
Bj.
Fact vs. TruthYou would think there is no difference between a fact and a truth. If you are familiar with computers you might think that a serial port and a COM port are the same thing. Yet neither case is true. Using the case of the serial port and COM port might help to understand. The serial port on a computer is a physical connection that allows you to plug in certain devices. The COM port is the software side of that same port. It is often confused. You are likely to see labels on a serial port that says COM1 or COM2. Usually COM1 is assigned to serial port 1 and COM2 is assigned to serial port 2. Yet you can assign any COM port to either serial port. A fact is not always the same as a truth. But usually they are. A fact is the current situation or status of something. It can be verified. It is like the serial port on a computer. A truth is what a person believes to be accurate. As I write this, I believe that my car is parked just outside my apartment. Lets say that after I left it to come inside, someone broke into it and stole it without my knowledge. If you were to ask me where my car was I would say that it is just outside the apartment. I would be telling you the truth as I know it. Yet the fact would be that some schmuck is driving it down the road. Now here is where it gets interesting: Truth has the ability to change facts. Think about when God created light. The fact was that it was all pitch black dark. There has never been such a thing as light. God conceived an idea of energy or as we call it light. He chose to believe that light existed as He said "Let there be light." This truth that was in God's heart contradicted the fact. Immediately the fact changed. All of a sudden light filled the entire universe. Do you recall Jesus walking on water? The fact was that people can't walk on water unless it is frozen solid. The disciples were in a ship sailing through that water, so we know it was not solid. Jesus must have believed that He could walk on water. His truth changed the fact. Peter was so inspired that even he thought he could walk on water if Jesus said "Come". As long as he felt in his heart that he could walk on water (truth) then he did. But once he looked at his surroundings and saw the fact, his truth changed to match the fact. You know what happened next? He fell into the water. So from this we see that truth changes facts and facts can change truth. Who controls this? Each person does. All too often you look at the facts and tune your truth into it. If your truth equals your fact then nothing changes. Yet if your truth is in God's word and it contradicts the facts, then the facts will change. Lets say that your doctor ran some tests on you and found that you have cancer. The fact is that you have cancer. the truth from the doctor is that you have cancer. Yet you are a person of faith who believes that by Jesus' stripes you were and are healed of every sickness. Your truth is that you do not have cancer because Jesus has already healed you. Your truth will change your fact. The cancer will be gone. This is how miracles happen. |
